Abronia “Gemini”

Americana Highways presents this premiere of Abronia’s song “Gemini” from their forthcoming album Shapes Unravel. The album was recorded by Evan Mersky at Echo Echo, with additional recording by Eric Crespo at Torch Toucher. It was mixed by Larry Crane and Abronia at Jackpot!, and mastered by Justin Weis at Trakworx. Strings were recorded by TJ Thompson at Ghost Bite, with the string arrangements by TJ Thompson and James Shaver.

Musicians on “Gemini” are Keelin Mayer (she/her) on vocals, tenor saxophone and flute; Rick Pedrosa on pedal steel and percussion; Robert Grubaugh on big drum, percussion and melodica; Danny Metcalfe on bass; James Shaver on guitar; Eric Crespo on guitar and backing vocals; and Kate Kilbourne on violin, viola and cello. Notably, this is the first and currently only Abronia song where Keelin Mayer, who usually plays saxophone and sings, in addition played flute.

Keelin Mayer tells us about the song’s inspirations: “I was originally inspired by the would-be dictator’s astrological sign, and the way he’s destroying the country. I was also thinking about the duality that the astrological sign Gemini represents and the ecological collapse we are currently witnessing. Towards the conclusion of the track we emerge from despair and band together to look for a way out.”

This song reconnects with some early psych rock ground as Anronia tackles contemporary deep worries with haunting vocal resonance in a dreamlike milieu.
