W.C. Beck – “Every Drop of Water”
Americana Highways presents this premiere of W. C. Beck’s version of Jerry Jeff Walker’s song “Every Drop of Water” from W. C.’s forthcoming album A Mostly Quiet Life, which releases in late August. A Mostly Quiet Life was engineered by Dave Maki and mixed by Joel Arnow. It was recorded at The Plaza in Brooklyn, NY.
All vocals and instruments on this song, including acoustic guitars, electric guitar, organ and vocals, were performed by W.C. Beck.
As W. C. says of the song, “Jerry Jeff Walker has been a huge inspiration of mine for about as long as I’ve been playing music and when we lost him to Covid in October of 2020, I was pretty devastated. I have most of his albums on vinyl and have covered his tunes for years. Deep in the Covid strange times, I was working on Facecomber and listening to some music on Amazon Music and his version of “Every Drop of Water” came on shuffle. I had somehow never heard it and it stopped me dead in my tracks – I think I must have hit repeat on that song 50 times. It was one of those times were you feel like a song is speaking directly to you alone and I knew I wanted to cover it as a tribute to Jerry Jeff.
“I recorded this tune in my home studio during the Facecomber sessions and like that album, I played and sang all of the parts. It’s a bit slower version of the tune and has some of the psych folk elements.”
The organ rings out amongst the clear acoustic strings as W. C. sings out “we’re all diamonds in the rough / we’ll all shine soon enough / We waste the good times and the bad / So remember when you’re sad / Those tears of joy and sorrow lead you home / Every drop of water shapes the stone.” It’s a comforting song and the comfort multiplies as W. C. sings it as central advice for all of us, including for the memory of Jerry Jeff.
