The Cactus Blossoms – Every Time I Think About You

The Cactus Blossoms have a new album Every Time I Think About You, a collection of songs ranging through topics and times when we need to let something or someone go, and move on.  The Cactus Blossoms are brothers Page Burkum and Jake Torrey, and their unconditional sibling connection results in seamless songwriting of classic rock sounds that seem to hail from simpler times.

“Something’s Got A Hold On Me” is a swaggery blues rock number with great guitar work and smooth vocals by the Minneapolis duo. “Go On” changes things up to a ballad and a slow tempo tune of regrets building up to beseeching harmonies and “the night before the morning when I saw the storm you tried to warn me then….”   “Go on, go on, go on, it’ll be all right.”

“Be What I Wanna” is a snappy syncopated ode to being exactly oneself, even when that means throwing off both conventional wisdom and expectations, and even when the outcome is not at all what was expected. “I don’t know what’s the matter with me… couldn’t see the forest for the trees until I ran into the fire.” And once again the song prompts you to keep moving, even in the face of failures.

The title track is a slow dance at the festival, lovely and heartbreaking.  “How long will I be living in memory? Tell me I’ve got to move on, every time I think about you I can’t keep from crying.” Move on from that poignant breakup.  “Keep Walking'” is a Southern rock Beatles-esque blended number rich with harmonies and killer organ “Take heed and mark my words / Someday I’m gonna fly like a bird / Keep walkin’.” Don’t look back.

The Cactus Blossoms are versatile, and they’re less western twang than a name involving cacti might suggest, but they’re all about stretching out and feeling alive in simple rock ‘n roll, tender ballads and a touch of rockabilly, out under big wide open skies.  This album chronicles so many ways to let go, stop dwelling, and move forward in spite of it all.
