Ruth Moody – “Already Free”

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Ruth Moody of the Wailin Jennys’ new song “Already Free” from her forthcoming album Wanderer. This album is slated for release on May 17 via True North Records.  Wanderer was produced by Dan Knobler (Alison Russell, Lake Street Dive) and Ruth Moody; engineered by Dan Knobler; and mixed by Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket, The Decemberists). It was mastered by Philip Shaw Bova.

“Already Free” is Ruth on vocals and acoustic guitar; Sam Howard on upright bass; Anthony da Costa on acoustic and electric guitars; Jason Burger on drums; and Kai Welch on Hammond organ and synth.

Ruth’s vocals hit soprano notes so clearly and sweetly as she admits to losing the thread that should be anchoring her, in this intimate, vulnerable and relatable song. And then comes the other side of the same coin: “Maybe I’m already free.” A lovely sounding song that acknowledges the points when we seem to slip and fall apart completely, just as part of the human condition.

I wrote the lyrics during the pandemic. This was me, saying ‘I’m not coping well, I’m losing my grip’ and finding strength in that admission. Sometimes when we hit rock bottom, we realize there is a chance to start over, to set a new path on our own terms. It’s a song about that moment of reckoning, that acceptance of vulnerability and surrender that ultimately helps us to find our resilience. It’s a song for anyone who is ready to let go of the weight they are carrying and be free. – Ruth Moody
