Rich Murray – “White Freightliner Blues”

Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Rich Murray’s version of Townes Van Zandt’s song “White Freightliner Blues,” from Murray’s forthcoming album Hillbilly Soul Music, due to be released later this year.  The album was c0-produced by Murray and Dane Clark, long time drummer for John Mellencamp. It was recorded at Dane Clark’s Thunder Sound Studio in Nashville.

Musicians on “White Freightliner Blues” are Rich Murray on acoustic guitar, bass, and lead vocals; Dane Clark on drums; Troye Kinnett (John Mellencamp) on accordion; Bill Kirchen on lead guitar; and the recently passed Jack R. Fields on harmony vocals.

The accordion at the start sounds like a freight train for sure and sets up a baseline zydeco feel, and perhaps this freight liners stops in New Orleans. Bill Kirchen’s guitar lives up to his “diesel guitar” reputation with a hard country flair and moments of fancy, and the rhythm section is rock steady. Rich’s vocals deliver the message with a raw authenticity. This song has a drivin’ energy and lots of hillbilly soul, with a roots rock dynamic that Townes himself would’ve approved.

I am very proud of everyone that contributed to this track. I believe Townes Van Zandt himself would approve our efforts. – Rich Murray
