The High Hawks – Mother Nature’s Show
All star musical group The High Hawks have a new album, their second, Mother Nature’s Show, available on Lo-Hi Records on February 16. This is quite a group, with quite solid songs.
The High Hawks are Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon), Tim Carbone (Railroad Earth), Chad Staehly (Hard Working Americans), Adam Greuel (Horseshoes & Hand Grenades), Brian Adams (Taxi); and Will Trask (Taxi). Each member of this all-star musical group also was involved (either playing in, or producing and engineering) the group Great American Taxi as well.
“Diamond Sky” is a good introduction to the long and serendipitously winding lyrical phrasing and harmonious singing that is the hallmark of this group. “If I can’t live inside of you like I once did, then give me a place beside you somewhere.” The fiddle is quite lovely.
“Somewhere South” get to foot-tapping and the optimistic desire to all hang out somewhere south, where there’s gonna be good fishing – “maybe Panama, Mexico, maybe the Keys, I don’t know.” “Temperature is Rising” is simultaneously hooky and restrained, with a sense that the temperature is rising and there’ll be a wreck up ahead.
“Fox River Blues” is a little more southern rock propelled with skipping fiddle and a driving bottom end. When you’ve got nothing to lose, selling drugs, drinking and smoking, running with the devil and down on your luck, it sounds just like this. “Waiting for a sign. ” This one gets a little jammy at the end.
The title track takes the driving beat into a Southern Rock groove that’s a throwback right to the Band. Get up and dance.
There’s a touch of fun and irreverence in their delivery, the singing is cool and the harmonies are divine. Lots of imagery of rivers, fishing, and other anecdotes and analogies to the rivers of the country and the South. And of course that’s just as it should be on Mother Nature’s Show.
