Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Randy Lewis Brown’s “One Horse Town” from his upcoming release Red Crow (Berkalin Records), produced by Merel Bregante at Cribworks Audio in Texas. Bregante was named CMA’s Producer of the Year in 2018, producing all but one of that year’s winning albums. Red Crow is Randy Lewis Brown on acoustic guitar, banjo, vocals, Michael Dorian on electric guitar (Sarah Pierce Band), Riley Osborne on Hammond B3, Mark Epstein on bass, Dirje Childs on cello, Cody Braun (Reckless Kelly) on fiddle, harmonica, mandolin, with Sarah Pierce on harmony vocals.
This is the lead track on the album for very good reason: it’s a standout. The protagonist sits on the front porch watching a horse decay in a field, while he sits there in a rocking chair “watching it fade away.” He can’t fathom leaving even as “the store is boarded up and the young folks have moved away… and the graveyard is all that grows down here.” The music is a buildup to a truly great guitar solo and chilling harmonies. Red Crow is an album of resolve and the poetic ache of realizing life’s finitude.
This song did not require extended contemplation but instead almost magically appeared as co-writer (Richard Paul Thomas) and I sat down with the image of a buzzard circling above a dying town. With that image the song wrote itself in one 2 hour setting. Sometimes we get lucky. — Randy Lewis Brown
