Americana Highways is pleased to present this song premiere of the Lark and the Loon’s “Wishing Well” from their upcoming release entitled 2. 2 was recorded at Marigny Studio in New Orleans and engineered by Rick Nelson (Polyphonic Spree), mixed and mastered by Justin Armstrong. “Wishing Well” is Rocky Steen-Rolfzen on vocals, washboard, and stompbox; Jeff Rolfzen on vocals and guitar, while Rick Nelson plays the upright bass.
With vocals dripping with wry qualities and dramatic effects, the concept of throwing a penny in the wishing well is played out among old-timey, jazz influenced sounds on “Wishing Well.” “You have my love now you don’t have to pay!” The Lark and the Loon provide delightful style washboard, stompbox and a 1930’s era guitar in a vintage New Orleans style album with modern recording quality.
“Wishing Well” started off as a challenge to see what kinds of sounds, dynamics, and expressions we could get out of one guitar, a washboard, and a wooden stompbox. Jeff’s 1936 National Duolian guitar is the same year & type as Blind Boy Fuller’s old 1936 National duolian which Fuller used extensively alongside Tampa Red who accompanied him on a washboard. Those two had such an incredible and definitive dynamic in the music they made and we were very interested in learning some element of that. The song’s message is a reminder to get away from consumerism and material security; sometimes daydreams and good company are the most fulfilling. — Rocky Steen-Rolfzen
