The Montvales – “Though the Night”

Americana Highways is hosting this video premiere of the Montvales’ song “Through the Night” from their forthcoming album Born Strangers, scheduled for release on Feb. 2.  The album was produced by Mile Eli LoPinto, engineered by Sean Sullivan, mixed by Jake Davis, and mastered by Kevin Butler.  The album cover was designed by Chris Jackson.

“Through the Night” in this video is Sally Buice on vocals and banjo and Molly Rochelson on vocals and guitar.

The video was directed and produced by Contrary Western.  This duo plays sublime rhythmic banjo and guitar with enduring repetitious sequences, with this honest song about the heady powerful feeling of trust.  The synergy between them makes you want to be part of the party.  This video is them playing it outdoors on the back deck (after hanging out with their cat) and singing with their twangy harmonies in a raw, real scene. “Let’s take what we can get to make it through the night.”

The years leading up to this album were a series of battles of self-determination. Quitting my job and moving out West to be a wrangler meant signing up to live in a world more presently full of risks – bears, mountain lions, riding out into the darkened prairie before sunrise, ghost stories that suddenly felt very real after sunset, on and on. It also meant trusting that a long distance relationship could work for a little while. When I got to the ranch, a coworker drew me a map of it so I could find all the lakes and springs and picnic spots. A hand drawn map felt like the right metaphor for that time. “Through the Night” captures the terrifying moment of transition from one kind of life to another. – Sally Buice
